The Best, Worst, and Most WTF Handbag Collabs
Inspired by the recent teaming up of Balenciaga x Adidas, sigh.
The recent Balenciaga x Adidas collaboration felt like a — dare I say it — lazy cash grab to me. I was underwhelmed by the $4,000 tracksuits and gym bags, but I found the Hourglass Bag mashup particularly irksome. Essentially, the powers-that-be slapped Adidas’ signature three stripes across the iconic Balenciaga bag and called it a day. The end result pales in comparison to virtually any of the candy-colored dopamine-inducing Hourglass bags populating the rest of Balenciaga’s current lineup.
Some collabs feel strained. Some collabs feel inspired. And some (like Balenciaga x Adidas) feel… confusing? Read on for the best, worst, and most WTF handbag collabs of all time, provided with little to no explanation.
The Best
Marc Jacobs x Peanuts: Cute. Digging the lunchbox vibe.
Jimmy Choo x Rob Pruitt: Nothing like a Swarovski-encrusted mini devil minaudière.
Louis Vuitton x Supreme: Smart. This works.
Louis Vuitton x Takashi Murakami: This was, as Vogue put it, the defining collaboration of the Noughties. It’s also worth mentioning that these rainbow-printed Louis Vuitton staples are in the midst of a massive secondary market surge. Just another reminder to Mynt your bags(!)
The Worst
Coach x Champion: Everything about this stresses me out.
Louis Vuitton x Comme de Garçons: I feel unsafe.
The Most WTF
Balenciaga x The Simpsons: IDK, I’d rather have the $1,750.
Givenchy x Disney: This looks like a gift-with-purchase tote you get for buying $35 worth of Clinique makeup.
Balenciaga x Adidas: This feels like the first suggestion anyone made when discussing this collaboration and they just decided to go with it. It’s lazy.
