The rise of the Hermes Birkin is one for the marketing history books. Hermes created the most exclusive handbag on the planet not by making it very expensive and very rare (though it’s those things too), but by making it virtually unavailable to purchase without a personal invitation.
Because of this, Birkins have become more than a sign of having cash to burn. They’re a sign that you’ve figured something out; that you’re part of the “in” crowd; that you know something the rest of us probably don’t.
But that’s okay because there is something we do know: There are two handbags out there that are a better investment than a Birkin — and they’re both much easier to get. If you’re looking for a real investment piece, go for a Hermes Kelly or a Chanel Classic Flap.
That’s right; Hermes’ own Kelly Bag has appreciated more since 2010 than its Birkin. The Kelly Bag’s value has risen a whopping 130% over the last decade-plus. In contrast, the Birkin’s value has risen around 95%. (It’s worth noting that both of these Hermes handbags outperform other common alternative assets including fine art, watches, first-edition books, and coins.)
And Chanel’s Classic Flap rose nearly 140% between 2010-2020 — and that was before the last four price hikes over the last two years. In 2020, Chanel’s Medium Classic Flap bag retailed for under $7,000. Today that price is $8,800.
